What comes through the door.

Running rough or stumblingCoils, plugs, injectors, a vacuum leak or a sensor lying to the computer.

OverheatingThermostat, water pump, radiator, fan or a hose. Do not keep driving it hot — that is how a gasket job starts.

Oil on the drivewayValve cover, oil pan, rear main, a cooler line. The stain tells you a lot about where to look.

Knocking or tickingCould be lifters or an accessory. It gets listened to on a cold start and a warm one.

White or blue smokeCoolant or oil is going somewhere it should not. This is the one worth catching early.

Tune-up timePlugs, filters, fluids — the routine pass that keeps the other five off this list.

Will you tell me if it is not worth fixing?

Yes. Some repairs cost more than the car is worth to you, and you should hear that before the parts are ordered, not after.

Do you work on high-mileage cars?

A lot of what is in the bays is high mileage. Age is not the problem — what is actually worn is.

Can you do a tune-up while it is in?

Usually, yes. If the engine is already apart for something else, ask — some of it is nearly free labour at that point.

How long does an engine job take?
