Stored and pending codesIncluding whether the monitors have been recently reset — that is a tell.

Brakes and tiresWhat is left, and whether the wear pattern says something else is wrong.

FluidsCondition as much as level. Milky oil or burnt transmission fluid ends a conversation quickly.

Panel and paint workOverspray, gaps, and paint that does not match — the shop paints cars, so it knows what to look at.

A road testHow it drives, brakes, shifts and tracks, which is where a lot of problems introduce themselves.

Can I bring a car from a dealer lot?

Most sellers will allow an inspection, and one that will not is telling you something. Arrange the time with them and call ahead so the bay is free.

Do you inspect cars you are not selling?

That is the whole idea of this one — an inspection from somebody with no stake in whether you buy it.

Will you tell me what it needs right away?

Yes, and what it will likely need in the next year. Both matter when you are deciding what to offer.

How long does it take?
